Explore the worlds of Californium, a first person exploration game where you are a writer trapped into shifting realities. Will you find what's behind the simulacra ? Berkeley, 1967. You are Elvin Green, a writer whose career is not better than his sentimental life. Besides, the day starts badly : your wife Thea left you a break up letter. As for Eddy, your editor, he summons you : "you are a writer who does not write" - you should find yourself another editor. Your world is falling apart. Too much acid and cheap booze ? Too many sleepless nights stuck to your typewriter, powerless to tackle your first novel ? Your poor mental health is collapsing. Luckily this nightmarish world is unstable, you can extract yourself from it and thus access another reality! You have nothing to lose!
With approx. 3 - 4 hours of play time unfortunately quite short, however I was entertained for 9 euro already less. The basic concept of alternating realities is fascinating and makes one think of Bioshock Infinite. In this game it was unfortunately...
only implemented as a walking simulator. I would have wished for more interaction possibilities like e. g. in adventure games (e. g. looking closer at newspaper articles and objects; switching radios on and off etc. ). But finding and triggering some points of action is a real challenge and sometimes led me to frustration. Unfortunately, many bugs spoil the fun. For example, I had to start the second reality anew because I could no longer climb the stairs of the diner and thus could not reach the point of action hidden there. In reality three I had to use the typewriter for five minutes blind at the beginning, because no suitable display appeared. Despite the weaknesses, the game leaves a very positive impression on me as a hobby discoverer.
