Space Engineers is a sandbox game about engineering, construction and maintenance of space works. Players build space ships and space stations of various sizes and utilization (civil and military), pilot ships and perform asteroid mining. Space Engineers utilizes a realistic volumetric-based physics engine: all objects can be assembled, disassembled, damaged and destroyed. The game comes with two game modes: creative and survival.
I now have almost 1000 game hours at SE and bought this game in November 2013 (shortly after release). I had more and less fun in the 1000 hours of play and can now say the following positive points:
1 You can build anything you want and it... feels great. If you enjoy programming, you can write exciting scripts. In multiplayer you can create cool RP games. There are almost no limits to creativity. PvP against other players can be extremely fun and exciting, the ship is really great to dismantle and you can build very technical redundancy systems that can save your ass. Survival is really great (if you like farming and building). The developers try to fulfill all wishes of the players (e. g. planets were never planned in SE, but now there are still some)
Unfortunately there are also some points against SE:
1 Your computer reaches the limits, the Performance (especially in multiplayer) can really bring down the game fun. The game is really empty. What good is a huge ship if you can't fill it with life, or it comes to bare rooms or corridors, because there are no multiblock and therefore hardly any furnishings. Mods are all well and good, but they destroy the game's performance. There's almost nothing to discover. Sometimes a cargo ship flies through space that can be robbed. It's no fun after the third time. Where is the AI. There are pirates, but they are hardly a challenge. There are no dealers, factions, AI persons. You can build a huge base with offices etc. but it will stay quiet. There is no target in the game. Yes, there is a short campaign and it was really successful, but even there you always have the feeling that something is missing. Finally, I can say:
SE is a great game, it's really fun. However, I would recommend Keen to finish the Space Engineers project and use the experience gained to develop a Space Engineers 2 from scratch, which should make a lot better. The game gets a good rating from me, because it is worthwhile for just under 25 euros. Everyone who enjoys being creative and likes spaceships is busy with SE between 20 and 50 hours. I don't recommend the game to anyone else. I wouldn't pay more than 30 euros for it.
