Its 8:08am on 8th August 1988, and the evil Dr. H8 has brought the world to the brink of total annihilation! His demands are simple: pay $88 octillion within 88 minutes, or Dr. H8s 88 thermo-nuclear warheads will wipe out the Earth! But who will save us in our time of need? The bravest? The boldest? No... the 88 Heroes!
Prepare to infiltrate Dr. H8's lair with the help of the strangest, dumbest and most pointless superheroes ever! With 88 levels between you and Dr. H8, only 88 seconds to complete each level and the 88-minute Doomsday clock already ticking, lead 88 unique characters – each with their own special abilities – on a platform-hopping, enemy-smashing, danger-dodging mission to save Earth from complete destruction!
Can the 88 Heroes save the day? Let's hope so! They called the best, but the best were busy…
I'm a former Sega Genesis player and I'll tell you that most (side-scroller) platform games have become complex, frustrating, and after a while have become a task. The only side scrolls I have ever loved were Altered Beast, Golden Axe, and Ghostbusters for Sega Genesis. This game is up there because of the variety factor. But it's different because you don't play with the same hero all the time. I'd say that's the most innovative idea there has been for retro gaming in a long time.
The 8 Heroes unlock mode is the best. You choose 8 of your favorite characters to get you through the game, although after death you can only choose one of three characters for resurrection once you have collected 88 coins. I'll make sure I don't die with the Laser Cat so I can keep it. The overweight woman throwing furniture is also pretty good, as are some of the Snails and the Invisible Sheriff. There's a character tossing a coin to decide if you can bypass the level. I'm sure if you keep it as your last character, you can flip the coin on any level and win the game. That's my new job. The boss fights are a lot of fun too. But some characters seem like it's impossible to beat the game. This title is one of those you have to have.
