At the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment have announced first tangible details of the new video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, as well as a fully-fledged trailer. The game is an important release for EA, as the company has previously been harshly criticized about their dealing with the prestigious sci-fi brand.
The game ultimately focuses on single-player fans only, with the entire game offering an action-based single-player mode. Players will take on the role of a completely new hero called Cal Kestis from a third person perspective, who is a Jedi padawan who survived the famous Order 66 - the extermination of virtually all Jedi by the Empire - and is now on the run. Therefore, he is trying to keep his head down, trying to stay undercover and not get detected, because he knows he is going to be hunted across the galaxy. Thematically, the game is located shortly after the events of the Revenge of the Sith. On his journey, the Padawan must complete his Jedi training and master the handling of the lightsaber. The first rule: Don't trust anyone! Trust only the Force!
The protagonist initially lives in secret on Bracca, a brand new planet in the Star Wars universe. He is part of a guild called the Scrapper Guild, which tears apart derelict starships dating back to the Clone Wars and sells the parts for profit. However, as they are tearing apart one of the starships, things quite literally start falling apart and an accident forces Cal to use his powers to save a friend. As a result, he is unmasked as a Jedi, which is why the empire sends all sorts of henchmen after him. Among them are the Second Sister, an elite inquisitor of the Empire and a new kind of trooper, called the Purge Trooper - pretty much designed to investigate possible locations of remaining Jedi's and call inquisitors to assassinate them. In contrast, Cal has the droid BD-1 and his mysterious companion Cere standing by his side.
Creative Director Stig Asmussen especially emphasized, that the single-player title will be strongly influenced by its story, but also provide close combat action. On our journey, we have to develop our abilities and work on our lightsaber skills - both have to be used cleverly against enemies in combat, as to exploit their weaknesses. The focus here is set on a combat system that should be easy to learn, but difficult to master. The game also features wall runs and other dynamic movement techniques familiar from previous Respawn Entertainment titles such as Titanfall, so our hero should be pretty fast on his feet.
Respawn Entertainment was founded in 2010 and has around 205 employees, with one of its latest titles including Apex Legends. According to Stig Asmussen, the team had the opportunity to employ experienced developers in peace and quiet, which is not a usual thing in the gaming industry. As a result, they were able to secure developers who had worked on titles like Uncharted, God of War, Batman, BioShock, Metal Gear, Titanfall and Call of Duty.
Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order will be available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 15, 2019. May the Force be with you!
