Skyrim is one of the most influential games ever created, and one of the more memorable parts of the game is the follower system. Followers are NPCs who follow you around, aid you in battle, and provide companionship around the massive world of Skyrim.
Most players always have a follower by their side, though everyone has a different opinion on who the best followers are. The main reason to choose a skyrimk follower is for their combat ability, but their differing personalities and the time it takes to meet them in your travels ensures that every player has a different experience.
With that being said, these are the 5 best followers to use in Skyrim.
5. Aela The Huntress
Aela the Huntress is a member of the Companions and an expert archery trainer. As her name implies, she's most proficient with bows and one handed weapons.
She's best utilized by giving her' a powerful bow and letting her pick off enemies from a distance, giving you some great suppressive fire. No matter your playstyle, she's a great companion to have to help deal some extra damage.
She's even a candidate for marriage if you choose to marry her. Her skills with a bow make her a great companion to keep around, especially if you are playing as a ranged class yourself.
4. J'zargo
One of the most unique followers in the game, J'zargo is a mage that can be recruited from the College of Winterhold. He uses various spells in battle such as healing, most types of destruction spells, and more.
There are 9 different spells he can cast as a follower, giving him a great variety of ways to destroy your enemies. While he doesn't have as many uses outside of being a follower, he makes up for it by being an interesting character and an ally proficient in magic.
3. Farkas
Farkas is the most formidable warrior from the Companions. Unlike others on this list, he's sheer muscle and brute force. Whether your playstyle is ranged or melee, Farkas can be used to soak up hits and deal some decent damage to your foes.
Besides being a great ally in combat, he's a master armor trainer who can level up your heavy armor to level 90, and a potential candidate for marriage. His brother Vilkas is another good choice if you're looking for someone more interesting to interact with, but he doesn't quite have the same muscle his brother has.
Though Farkas is a man of few words, there's no other follower with that much brute force and strength.
2. Serana
Serana is an ancient vampire you awaken from a several century's long slumber. You then proceed to help her through a series of adventures leading you to places literally out of your current dimension.
Whether or not you enjoy having Serana as your follower, you're forced to have her follow you for the duration of her questline. She does have some pretty powerful magic abilities, the strongest of any other follower in fact.
She wield powers such as necromancy, lightning, and lifedrain to obliterate your enemies, making her an insane ally in battle. If you're looking for sheer combat ability, Serana is the follower to travel with.
1. Lydia
Ah, Lydia, everyone's favorite pack mule. Since she's the first unlockable follower, she's by far the most popular and best skyrim follower to use. She becomes your companion very early on in the game, and can be by your side as long as you want.
She's a fantastic warrior, wife, and walking storage unit. If you do choose to marry her, she sets up a shop in Whiterun where she'll provide you with 100 septims per day, as well as giving you nice home cooked meals.
This coupled with the fact that she's the first follower leads many players to become very attached to her, and refuse to have anyone else be their follower.' Her combat abilities may not be as powerful as Serana, but you can't even meet Serana until much later in the game, and that's if you own the DLC.
People often search for the most powerful follower, not even realizing that the best is already tagging along in their adventures.
